The interdisciplinary research project Protanz.NRW focuses on the decarbonization strategies of North Rhine-Westphalia’s (energy-intensive) industry. NRW faces particular challenges due to its economic productivity. In order to support the progressive design processes, the project examines which factors influence the acceptance of infrastructure projects for CO² savings in large-scale industries and which interactions can arise with protest movements in regards to climate and energy in North Rhine-Westphalia.
Project
In order to be largely climate-neutral by 2045, a purposeful (further) development of the transformation of industrial economic structures and infrastructures is necessary. This requires a successful negotiation process between (active) civil society, industry and politics at different levels of decision-making.
In order to support the progressive design processes, the project examines which factors influence the acceptance of infrastructure projects for CO2 savings in large-scale industries, as well as which interdependencies may arise with protest movements in the area of climate and energy in North Rhine-Westphalia. The project Protanz.NRW thus generates knowledge about the issues and reconcilability of socially heterogeneous interests and movements with transformation processes in the North Rhine-Westphalian (energy-intensive) industry.
Thus, the interdisciplinary research project aims to understand forms of protest and conceptions about acceptability in the population. Utilizing different scientific perspectives and methods in a participatory process – both analog and digital – the project also sets out to research the attitude held by the silent majority of the population towards the forms of
protest.
The overarching questions of the project are:
Project Management: Wuppertal Institut
Consortium: Bergische Universität Wuppertal, Hochschule Bochum, Ruhr-Universität Bochum, RWTH Aachen, Wuppertal Institut
Funding: Ministerium für Wirtschaft, Innovation, Digitalisierung und Energie des Landes NRW (MWIDE)
Project Duration: 07/2021 – 06/2023
